As I wrote to before in an earlier (and unfortunately outdated and incorrect) blog,

There was an interesting and controversial article released in 2005 by John Ioannidis titled, “Why Most Published Research Findings Are False”. In it, he uses Bayes’ Theorem to argue that, much like in our example above, the probability that a phenomenon is true given a positive research result is much lower than we think. This can be dangerous because we may be taking research as fact without additional verification. It also highlights an important issue in the scientific community, mainly that there is little funding/interest in replicating previous studies.

Bayes’ Theorem allows us to overcome our incorrect intuitions about conditional probability in a logical, straightforward manner. Its applications are real and varied, ranging from understanding our test results (with real-world consequences) to improving our machine learning models. I hope this guide was useful and illuminated some of the counterintuitive aspects of Bayes’.

As a writer, you may believe that your boredom will start showing in your writing. On the contrary, when you are bored, you may feel sympathetic towards your readers who might be feeling bored sitting alone in a flat, or a train, or waiting for a doctor’s appointment for a checkup of genital warts. As a bored writer — you are feeling the effects of your dopamine fasting — your words will start becoming enchanted like a magician’s magical wand. The more bored you are, the more compelled you feel to create a word picture so striking that your readers may feel energized.

This Displayed duration does not necessarily include everything your app needs to do before it’s ready to go. You can supply that extra information to the system by calling Activity.reportFullyDrawn() whenever your app determines it’s completely done loading and initializing. If/when you call that optional method, the system issues another log with that timestamp and duration:

Despite their obvious deformities, many of these abominations have distinct body segments (arms, legs, heads) and they all have vibrant, diverse colours. Some even have eyes!

No writer publishes the draft without editing it first. Editing can be dull if you do not want to remove any part of your writing. After all, you did not allow yourself to write anything irrelevant or monotonous. Had you let yourself write the boring sections, you could remove them to make your editing more fun.
In April, I proposed the AutoEncoding Generative Adversarial Network architecture (medium, arxiv), a generalization of CycleGAN, which combines two GANs and two autoencoders. Recently, I thought to myself, “what would happen if I used the AEGAN technique to generate video game sprites using Pokemon as training data?” Let me tell you, some questions are better left unasked.
During Gregorio VII’s time was also when corruption was very rampant in the church as well. To tackle the old corruption problem within the church, the Pope decided to enforce abstinence on every priest, monk, and nun. Marrying or any kind of sexual relationship for monks, priests, and nuns was forbidden and they were forced to practice abstinence daily. One of the most significant changes that Gregorio VII brought was the standardized haircut for monks. The haircut that these monks had was called the Tonsure, or Tonsura in Latin. The word tonsure means “clipping”, as in clipping one’s hair off. The bizarre haircut started around 1073 when Pope Gregorio VII was enthroned. During this time, the culture in the church was very lenient on haircuts, dress code, and even dating amongst monks, priests, and nuns. This duration (1,380ms in this example) represents the time that it took from launching the app to the time when the system consider it “launched,” which includes drawing the first frame (hence “Displayed”).Bayes’ Theorem allows us to overcome our incorrect intuitions about conditional probability in a logical, straightforward manner. When you are bored, you can feel that your reader wants to read not-boring stories. You could present the dullest parts of life in an entertaining style if you wanted to. Imagine a writing game where you have to compose an enjoyable story with boring parts. For example, when a character in your story feels dull, let her visualize that she is on a beach, wearing a bikini, with her fantasy partner having the most fun time of her life.

I’ll link this excellent overview by Jason Brownlee. Naive Bayes is a very common classification model that calculates P(class|data), or probability of a class given the data. Bayes Optimal Classifier can be used to predict on new observations given previous training data. Bayesian optimization can be used to fine-tune hyperparameters of ML models. Brownlee covers all these and more in the guide, and he does it better than I could.

“Look, Clayton, I’m a busy man and I don’t have time to read drivel from academics but someone you told me you had this theory… and I’m wondering if you could come out to present what you’re learning to me and my staff and tell us how it applies to Intel.”

0*DFOQ1rN2PsXl4z4VOne of the more common regulations is haircut: in Buddhism, monks shave their heads clean to symbolize cutting ties with the secular world. In medieval times, the same applied to Catholic monks, except it was a unique cut where only the top of their scalps are shaved and the edges left untouched.

Your mind has a psychological immune system, similar to your immune system. If you are feeling bored, your mind will exaggerate the intensity and duration of the feeling of boredom. Your mind, to protect you from boredom, will come up with such magnificent ideas that your creativity may surprise you.

So begins the story that Clay Christensen would love to tell about how Andy Grove of Intel famously came to be a convert to the theory of disruption. Christensen shared with Grove his research on how steel minimills, starting at the low end of the market, had gained a foothold and used that to expand the addressable market, continued to move upmarket, and finally disrupted the giant incumbents like US Steel.

Performance testing should always involve running a test many times, to reduce the inherent variability in results; the more runs you do, the more faith you can put in the averaged results. I try to run tests a minimum of ten times, but doing even more is even better. Depending on how variable the results are in your situation, and how small the timings are (since variability would have larger impact on smaller durations), doing many more runs might be necessary.

Here’s a handful of the unfortunate creatures my GAN spit into existence (if you’re on mobile and they look blurry, check them out here instead. All sprites by the author):
